SHOP NOWSocial media makes us think healthy aging requires a cold plunge, a red light therapy mask, a cabinet full of peptide stacks, and a robust supplement stack. The longevity space has been drowned out by biohacker culture that pushes expensive products and extreme protocols as the only path to aging well.
But what if the most powerful things you can do for your long-term health aren’t intense or high-tech at all?
Dr. Kien Vuu, also referred to as “Dr. V”, talks about what healthy aging actually looks like for everyday people. Dr. Vuu is a physician who works with athletes and everyday adults alike, and the philosophy in his book titled Thrive State is built on a simple idea: you have more agency over your health than you realize, and you don’t need to be a biohacker to make an impact on your healthy aging journey.
When people picture longevity medicine, they often imagine a lifestyle with cutting-edge, expensive products and advanced technology: the pricey skin care products, the magic weight loss pills, and more. That’s how longevity has been marketed, but true healthy aging goes deeper than those products.
“To me, longevity is really not only about extending our lifespan, but truly feeling like we are living,” says Dr. Vuu. “The highest leverage things that we do for longevity aren’t expensive or high-tech at all. It’s how we sleep, how we move, how we eat, how we handle stress, and how we live our lives, and how we treat each other. Those are free and available to everyone.”
Dr. Vuu isn’t against cold plunges or wellness gadgets, but he considers them as tools in a broader conversation. They belong as additives to your broader wellness lifestyle that includes small, daily choices: “You are in the driver’s seat with how you approach life. The lifestyle drives everything, and all the additional technologies are assistants.”

As much as you might want to “cure” or “defeat” aging entirely, that’s not possible. But this is not bad news: accepting this fact offers an entirely new perspective on aging, longevity, and long-term wellness.
“When you make aging the enemy, when you’re fearing it, you’re actually living in a low-grade state of stress,” Dr. Vuu explains. “Your nervous system goes into fight or flight, inflammation goes up, and your immune system goes down. Prolonged stress is one of those things that actually accelerates the biology of aging.”
This means letting go of the fear around aging can make your aging experience positive and even enjoyable. Dr. Vuu’s reframe is empowering: “Aging is inevitable, but how you age isn’t.” Shifting from fearing aging to embracing life, savoring moments, serving others, and living fully during all of life’s stages moves your body from a state of stress to a state where it can actually thrive.

Before you change your entire routine or say goodbye to certain foods, remember that you do not have to overhaul your entire life all at once to age well.
“The biggest belief people struggle with is this all-or-nothing mentality, that if you can’t buy all the gadgets and follow the perfect protocol, there’s no point in starting,” says Dr. Vuu. “That perfectionism…works against the very thing you’re trying to do.”
Healthy aging is built on small, consistent, sustainable choices that compound over time. This means one better night of sleep, a 10-minute walk, a meal with real food, and a moment of connection with a loved one can help you age better without you even realizing it.
“You don’t need to become a different person,” Dr. Vuu says. “You just need to make the conscious choice and let that build on itself. Consistency will beat intensity every single time.”
Dr. Vuu shares these tips because his previous lifestyle did not serve his aging journey. Before becoming a physician, Dr. Vuu was overweight, managing a host of health issues, and taking multiple prescription medications to ease his discomfort. His turning point wasn’t a gadget or a protocol: it was learning to pause, breathe, and make one conscious, healthy choice at a time.
“There’s a famous quote from Michelangelo,” Dr. Vuu recalls. “When asked how he created David from this big marble, he says, ‘I just chipped away at the things that were not him.’ That’s what we’re doing when we start to become conscious of who we are.”
You might be wondering: if I take supplements, how important are smart lifestyle choices? When it comes to supplementation, Dr. Vuu reiterates that healthy, daily choices are always the most important. He thinks of the body as an ecosystem, and supplements as support that makes the whole system run better, but only after the foundation is in place.
“Your consciousness, your choices in sleep, movement, nutrition, stress management, and connection — that’s the head coach,” he says. “Supplements are the assistant coach. They make the whole system run better after you optimize the key lifestyle things, but they can’t rescue you out of a depleted one.”
Back when he was not living a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle, supplements wouldn’t have moved the needle. “If I didn’t fix how I was living life, those supplements wouldn’t have done anything for me,” he recalls. “The order matters: getting the foundation right first, and then layering in the targeted support that fits each person.”

Mitochondria produce the cellular energy that the body needs to function and age well. As the “CEO of the cell,” mitochondria cannot work on their own: they need daily support through lifestyle choices to keep powering the body.
“Poor sleep, prolonged stress, processed foods, environmental load — all of this leads to mitochondrial dysfunction,” Dr. Vuu explains. “When your cells can’t make cellular energy efficiently, you start to feel fatigued, you have slower recovery, you get brain fog, and…aging accelerates.”
Ubiquinol, the active antioxidant form of CoQ10, is an important nutrient for overall wellness and healthy aging. It supports cellular energy production so the body’s organs can continue to function properly. It also acts as an antioxidant to protect cells from oxidative stress, which happens when there’s an imbalance in the body between free radicals and antioxidants. Free radicals are unstable molecules that steal electrons from other cells to balance themselves, while antioxidants are molecules that donate electrons to help neutralize free radicals. When there aren’t enough antioxidants to keep free radicals in check, oxidative stress occurs.
“Ubiquinol is very interesting because it actually supports both sides of the equation,” says Dr. Vuu. “It helps your cells produce energy, but it also acts as an antioxidant to bring down that oxidative stress that’s happening in our body.”
Starting around age 40, the body’s natural production of ubiquinol and CoQ10 declines, and the conversion from ubiquinone to ubiquinol becomes less efficient. Supplementation is key here, not as a replacement for lifestyle choices, but as the assistant that helps fill nutritional gaps and replenish ubiquinol levels in the body.

Not all ubiquinol supplements are created equal. Kaneka Ubiquinol® is a science-backed choice, and Dr. Vuu points to Kaneka Ubiquinol® for three reasons:
“Kaneka was actually the first company to successfully stabilize ubiquinol for supplementation, and it’s the bioidentical form, which means it is the exact same as what your body produces,” Dr. Vuu notes. “I tell people to look for the Kaneka Ubiquinol® seal on the label so they know exactly what they’re getting. And take it with a meal that has some healthy fat — like avocado, olive oil, or ghee — since it’s fat-soluble and absorbs better that way.”
Every individual has different needs, so the role of supplements is unique from person to person. For example, those undergoing high physical exertion, experiencing consistent stress, adults taking statin medications, women going through menopausal stages, and older adults can all especially benefit from a Kaneka Ubiquinol® supplement. For a healthy adult in their 20s and 30s, Kaneka Ubiquinol® sets the foundation for long-term cellular wellness. Someone in their 60s or older may benefit from a higher dose, which makes sense.
For anyone still on the fence about starting to take Kaneka Ubiquinol®, Dr. Vuu offers a simple reminder: “We live in a world of chronic stress — from work, screens, poor sleep, processed food, and the environment itself. All of these things quietly tax your mitochondria. Even if you feel basically fine, your cells may be operating with less energy and less protection than they should.”
